Ashio-Dozan Copper Mine

Information

Ashio-Dozan Copper Mine was opened by the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Edo Period (1603 - 1868). The mine and its surroundings were once prosperous as “the mining capital of Japan”, producing 40 percent of the country's copper, which was the highest amount in the East, at its peak. Ashio-Dozan was closed down in 1973 after over 400 years of its operation. Today, the mine is restored as a tourist spot and visitors can go into the country’s largest mine exhibit by tram.
