Travel Guide - Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome)

The Hiroshima Industrial Promotion Hall was constructed in 1915. This building was highly regarded for its imposing European style. On August 6, 1945, it was instantly destroyed by the first atomic bombing in history. Flames enveloped the ceiling of the dome and consumed the entire building, killing everyone within. Parts of the wall, which withstood the blast because it came from above, together with the steel frame of its dome. Because of its shape and circumstances, it came to be called the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome in Japanese). The dome was the only structure left survive and have become a symbol of Hiroshima.
Atomic Bomb Dome serves as a historical witness to convey the tragedy of the first atomic bombing in the world's history and a symbol of our vow to abolish nuclear weapons, and for lasting world peace. Based on the World Heritage Convention, the A-Bomb Dome was registered on the UNESCO World Heritage list in December 1996.
