Travel Guide - Chion-in Temple

InformationInformation

Chion-in was established by Honen in 1175 on the site where he had taught and eventually fasted to death. The temple is the headquarters of the Jodo school of Buddhism, which was founded by Honen. After the Honen's death, the temple was once attacked and destroyed in 1227 by the monks from Enryaku-ji Temple but reconstructed in 1234 by Genchi, an apprentice of Honen.
The temple particularly prospered in the Edo Period (1603 - 1868) with support from the Tokugawa Shogunate because Tokugawa Ieyasu and his ancestors were followers of the Jodo school of Buddhism. The oldest of the present buildings date back to that time.
The two-story San-mon Gate at the main entrance was built in 1621 by the second Tokugawa Shogun, Hidetada. This is the largest temple gate in Japan and it took about two years to complete. The temple's immense Miei-do main hall was built in 1639 by the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemistu. The hall with its fantastic gold alter contains an wooden image of Honen (*Miei-do hall is in the process of renovation and expected to complete it in 2019). Behind the main hall is the Ohojo hall. The hall is famous for its "Uguisu-bari (nightingale floors)" to "sing (squeak)" at every step. The massive scale of the buildings reflects the popular nature of the Jodo school, which holds that earnest faith in the Buddha is all that is necessary to achieve salvation.
In addition to these halls, you can also walk around and see the temple's beautiful Japanese gardens (Yuzen-en Garden and Hojo-teien Garden). The temple's giant bell, cast in 1636 and weighing 74 tons, is the largest in Japan. The bell requires 17 monks to make the bell budge and is only rung on New Year's Eve or the memorial service for Honen held in April.
