Travel Guide - Daigo-ji Temple

InformationInformation

Daigo-ji Temple, established in 874 by the priest Shobo (Rigen-Taishi), is one of the main temples of the Shingon school of Buddhism. The temple's name "Daigo (ultimate essence of milk)" refers to the five periods of Buddha's teaching which were often compared to the five forms of milk prepared in India, and "Daigo" is the highest form in Japanese.
The temple is expanded into a vast complex of buildings on Mt. Daigo-san. The temple grounds are divided into two levels, and they are called Shimo Daigo (lower level) and Kami Daigo (upper level). The buildings on the lower level were ravaged during the Onin War (1467–1477) with the exception of the five-story pagoda. This pagoda, built in 951, still stands and is the oldest of its kind in Japan. It is also the oldest existing building in Kyoto.
The dilapidated temple complex was then extensively restored by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and he held a great feast here in 1598. This Hideyoshi's feast, held just 6 months before his death, was called "Daigo-no-Hanami (Cherry-blossom-viewing at Daigo)". Today, a parade featuring this historical event called "Ho-taiko Hanami Gyoretsu" is held every year on the second Sunday in April.
Sanbo-in Temple was founded as a sub-temple of Daigo-ji Temple in 1115. Along with other buildings of Daigo-ji Temple, the sub-temple was also rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1598. Sanbo-in Temple features Kano paintings and a landscape garden. The garden, designed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi himself, is packed with about 800 stones. It is one of the finest examples showing the legendary fortuitous crane, tortoise and isle of eternal youth using stones and spring ponds of the type in the Azuchi-Momoyama Period (1573 – 1603).
Daigo-ji Temple and Sanbo-in Temple were both registered as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto in 1994. The temple's treasure house called "Reiho-kan" holds over 100,000 items including national treasures and important cultural assets.
