Travel Guide - Fushimi-Inari Taisha Shrine

InformationInformation

Fushimi-Inari Taisha Shrine is said to be founded around 711 by the Hata clan to dedicate to Inari, the god of good harvest and business success. Today, this is the head shrine of over 30,000 Inari-jinja shrines all over Japan. The shrine's red Ro-mon Gate donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1589 and the Honden main hall built in 1499 are both designated as important cultural properties.
The shrine's entire complex sprawls across the wooded slopes of Mt. Inari-yama. The most popular attraction of the shrine is the tunnels consisted of hundreds of Torii arches lined up on a pathway that leads to the mountain. There are also dozens of stone foxes, the messenger of the god Inari, on the way.
Fushimi-Inari Taisha Shrine holds many festivals and rituals all year round. On April 1 and November 1, there is a festival called Kenka-sai Festival. The festival features displays of flower arranging. On the Sunday around April 8, there is a Sangyo-sai Festival with offerings and dances to ensure prosperity for all industries in the country.
Local delicacies sold on the approach streets include barbecued sparrow and Inarizushi. Sparrows are considered to be an enemy to prosperity because they eat up rice grains. Inarizushi is fried Tofu (Abura-age) wrapped around sweetened Sushi rice, and the Abura-age is commonly believed to be the favorite food of the fox.
