Travel Guide - Ginkaku-ji Temple (Jisho-ji Temple)

InformationInformation

Ginkaku-ji Temple was built in 1482 originally as a villa "Ginkaku" for the 8th Muromachi Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa after the example of "Kinkaku (Kinkaku-ji Temple)" built by his grand father, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Yoshimasa used the villa as a genteel retreat from the turmoil of civil war. After Yoshimasa’s death, the villa was turned into a Zen temple called Jisho-ji Temple. "Jisho" means Yoshimasa’s posthumous Buddhist name.
The Dojinsai room in the temple's Togu-do Hall is the oldest example of Shoin-zukuri (Japanese traditional residential architectural style) in existence. The design of the temple's Karesansui-style dry garden with meticulously raked Ginsyadan (sand waves) and Kogetsudai (piles of sand) was influenced by the thought of Zen Buddhism.
Although its name translates as "Silver Pavilion", the building of Ginkaku-ji Temple is not covered in silver. It is still uncertain but there are two possible reasons for that. The first is because of their financial difficulties at that time. The second is because it was simply called "Ginkaku" as contrast with "Kinkaku (Gold Pavillion)" and they did not to plan to cover the building in sliver from the very beginning.
Ginkaku-ji Temple was registered as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto in 1994.
