Hakone-Yumoto is a main gateway to Hakone-Yumoto is a main gateway to the Hakone Hot Spring District. Yumoto Onsen Hot Spring was discovered in the Nara Period (710 - 794) and is the oldest hot spring in the district. It springs up at the confluence of the Sukumo-gawa River and the Hayakawa River, which is the outlet of Lake Ashi-no-ko. Well-appointed inns are located in quiet settings along the picturesque gorge.
It is said that Hojo Soun, one of the major Daimyo feudal lords who conquered Sagami (today's Kanagawa) during the Muromachi Period (1336 - 1573), bathed in the hot spring at Kumano-jinja Shrine to heal his wounds. There is a spa facility near the shrine where you can bathe the legendary hot spring.
