Hokkaido University Botanic Garden

Information

Hokkaido University Botanic Garden was opened in 1886 as the Japan's first modern botanic garden. Even though located in the center of Sapporo City, the 13.3 hectares of precincts retain some sections of virgin forest and contains some 4,000 varieties of plants. There are also the remains of pit dwellings from Satsumon culture (7 - 13th century), a rock garden with rocks from around the world, the Former Batchelor Residence, which was the first museum in Sapporo, and the Dr. Kingo Miyabe Memorial Hall, the first curator of the garden.
