Travel Guide - Kabuki-cho

InformationInformation

Kabuki-cho is Japan's foremost nightlife district, which boasts over 60 years' history. It was established in 1947 as part of an effort to rebuild war-ravaged Tokyo following World War II. You may think Kabuki-cho is related to one of Japanese traditional stage arts, Kabuki, but actually there is no Kabuki theater here. The name came from a reconstruction plan to create a "healthy amusement area with entertainment facilities" in this area. However, financial issues and architectural regulations led to a halt of Kabuki theater's construction and only the name survived.
Today, Kabuki-cho is called "sleepless town" and is a major amusement district that comes alive after dark. Among the huge assortment of bars and amusement facilities such as cinemas, Pachinko parlors and Karaoke, garish neon lights of hostess clubs, "love hotels" and sleazy adult-entertainment establishments stand out. As Kabuki-cho continued to develop with Japan's booming economic grouth, a system of certification was introduced by law and consequently adult-entertainment establishments became legal and an accepted part of the landscape.
