Kaminoyama Onsen Hot Spring

Information
Kaminoyama Onsen flourished as an inn town in the Edo Period (1603 - 1867) and was one of the three famous hot spring resorts in the Tohoku region along with Higashiyama Onsen and Yunohama Onsen. There are a number of hot springs in six areas in Kaminoyama City — Yumachi, Tokamachi, Shinyu, Takamatsu, Hayama, and Kawasaki — collectively referred to as Kaminoyama Onsen. With its abundant hot spring water, Kaminoyama Onsen is home to seven public bathhouses, five foot bath facilities, sixteeen inns scattered in this six areas. The oldest source of the hot spring is said to be Tsuruhagi-no-Yu in Yumachi. According to legend, a traveling monk saw a crane had recovered and flown away after soaking its wounded leg in a hot spring in a marsh there. In the town there is a stone where that the crane was said to have rested, the birthplace of the hot spring resort.
