Travel Guide - Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera Temple is a historic temple originally established in 778, which is even earlier than the time when Kyoto became the capital of Japan in 794. The temple's current Hondo main hall was reconstructed in 1633 by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Hondo main hall has a famous wooden stage, supported on hundreds of pillars, which stands 13 meters above ground and juts out over the hillside. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Kyoto City from here.
The three small water streams flowing under the Hondo main hall are called "Otowa-no-Taki (Otowa Waterfall)". The temple's name "Kiyomizu" literally means clean water, and the name came from it. The water is believed to have powers for longevity, health, and learning. Many visitors line up to drink the sacred water.
The temple's three-story pagoda, designated as an important cultural property, is 31 meters tall and is one of the highest three-story pagodas in Japan. Dotted around the precincts are other halls and shrines including Jishu-jinja Shrine.
Both Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Jishu-jinja Shrine in the temple's premises were registered as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto in 1994.
