Kochi Castle is noted for its Tenshukaku donjon, originally built by Yamauchi Kazutoyo and Yamauchi Tadayoshi in 1611. It was once burnt down by a great fire in 1727, but rebuilt in 1753. It is the only castle to have all the original buildings (not replica) in the Honmaru (innermost ring of defense) still standing. The castle's Tenshukaku, walls and gates were designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1950.
