Travel Guide - Koryu-ji Temple

InformationInformation

Koryu-ji Temple is one of the oldest temples in Kyoto founded in 603 by Hata-no-Kawakatsu to honor a Buddhist statue presented from Prince Shotoku-taishi. Shotoku-taishi was the crown prince and regent to Empress Suiko, and was an enthusiastic promoter of Buddhism.
The Hatto Lecture Hall in the temple houses a magnificent trio of 9th century statues. The Reiho-kan (Treasure House) contains numerous of fine Buddhist statues from the Asuka Period (592 - 710) to the Kamakura Period (1185 - 1333) including the Naki Miroku (Crying Miroku) and the world renowned Miroku Bosatsu. The extraordinarily expressive wooden Miroku Bosatsu statue is Japan's first designated national treasure.
