Travel Guide - Kurama-dera Temple

InformationInformation

Kurama-dera Temple was founded in 770 by the monk Gantei, a disciple of Ganjin (Jianzhen). Originally belonging to the Tendai sect, the temple has been independent since 1949, describing its own brand of Buddhism as Kurama-Kokyo sect.
In 770, Gantei left Toshodai-ji Temple of Nara in search of a wilderness sanctuary where he meditate. When wandering in the hills north of Kyoto, he came across a white horse which led him to the valley known today as Kurama. After settling in Mt. Kurama-yama, he was attacked by a demon but saved by Bishamonten (Vaisravana), the guardian god of the northern quarter of the Buddhist heaven. Then he established Kurama-dera Temple to worship Bishamonten in the current location, just below the peak of the mountain. The statue of Bishamonten enshrined in the temple is now designated as a National Treasure. The temple is also known as a legendary place where Ushiwaka-maru (Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune) spent in his boyhood and met Tengu (Long-nosed goblin).
To reach the entrance of the temple, you can take a tram that goes to the top of the hill. You can also choose to hike up a trail that winds through a forest of tall cedar trees. At the top of the hill, there is a courtyard dominated by the temple's Honden main hall. The view from the hall is brilliant, especially in the season of cherry blossoms in the spring or colored leaves in the autumn. Behind the hall a trail leads off to the mountain's peak. From the mountain peak, you can head off to the valley floor of Kibune by taking a descending trail down the other side.
