Travel Guide - Kyoto National Museum

InformationInformation

Kyoto National Museum was originally opened as The Imperial Museum of Kyoto in 1897. The museum is mainly housed in two buildings - the prominent red brick building built in 1895 is the museum's former main building (Meiji Koto-kan), and the modern-style white building completed in 2014 is the current main building (Heisei Chishin-kan). The former main building is designated as a Important Cultural Property and is only used for special exhibitions today.
The museum holds about 12,000 of fine arts, historical artifacts and handicrafts, and half of them were donated from the public including shrines and temples in Kyoto and Nara. The museum's collection of fine arts is especially highly rated, holding over 200 items that are designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.
The museum also displays stone Buddha statues created in the Heian Period (794 - 1185), stone pagodas created in the Kamakura Period (1185 - 1333), and a famous sculpture "The Thinker" by Auguste Rodin in the garden.
