Travel Guide - Matsue Castle (Chidori Castle)

InformationInformation

Matsue Castle was built in 1611 by Matsue's first Lord, Yoshiharu Horio. The elegance of the castle's swooping roofs is often compared to the wings of a Chidori (plover), which has led to the castle's alternative name as "Chidori Castle". Matsue Castle is the sole remaining castle in the San'in Region (northern part of the Chugoku Region), and one of only 12 remaining original castles in Japan. The castle's Tenshukaku central tower offers a panoramic view of the castle grounds and surroundings. Beautiful camellia and cherry blossoms fill the castle grounds in spring and it is a recognized symbol of the historic city.
The road alongside the moat on the north-eastern side of the castle is known as the Shiomi Nawate, at one time a narrow lane throught the old Samurai quarter. The high tile-topped walls still remain from that era and there are a number of places of interest.
