Matsumoto Castle

Information

Matsumoto Castle, which is the oldest castle in Japan, still containing it is original wooden donjons, has 5 layers but 6 floors and is one of four castles designated as a National Treasure in Japan. The othe National Treasure castles are Himeji Castle in Hyogo, Inuyama Casele in Aichi and Hikone Castle in Shiga. It is said that the donjon of Matsumoto Castle was built around 1593 to 1594 by Ishikawa Kazumasa and Ishikawa Yasunaga.
Since it was built in the Sengoku Period (Warring state period), Matsumoto Castle, which is uncommonly built on flatland, was focused more on its armament rather than its comfort as a residence. Historically, it has been highly valued as a castle built during the early stage of modern castle building in Japan.
