Travel Guide - Nijo Castle

InformationInformation

After the decisive Battle of Sekigahara, Nijo Castle was built in 1603 as the main base in Kyoto for the first Edo Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. The castle's sumptuous construction was intended to emphasize the Tokugawa Shogunate's prestige and to signal the demise of the power of the Toyotomi clan, and even the emperor. After the Ieyasu's death, the third Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu renovated the castle as it is seen today to welcome Emperor Go-Mizunoo. Like other Japanese castles, Nijo Castle once had a donjon but it was burnt down by thunder in 1750.
The premises of the castle are mainly divided into two sectors: Honmaru-goten Palace (Important Cultural Property) and Ninomaru-goten Palace (National Treasure). After passing through the castle's grand Kara-mon Gate (Important Cultural Property), you will find Kurumayose, the entrance building of Ninomaru-goten Palace. The palace is divided into six buildings (Tozamurai, Shikidai, Ohiroma, Sotetsu-no-Ma, Kuro-Shoin, Shiro-Shoin) with a number of chambers. Access to each building was limited and depended on rank - only those of highest rank, such as chief vassals of the Shogunate, Daimyo feudal lords, and the relatives of the Tokugawa family were permitted into the inner buildings. To safeguard against Ninja and other sneak attacks, "Uguisu-bari (nightingale floors)" were installed in the corridors of the Ninomaru-goten Palace so that intruders can be detected by the floor's squeaking sound when they step on it.
The current neighboring Honmaru-goten Palace used to be the former palace of Katsura-no-miya, a branch of the Imperial Family. The building was moved here from Kyoto-Gyoen in 1894 after the original Honmaru-goten Palace was burnt down by fire during the Edo Period (1603 - 1868).
Nijo Castle was registered as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto in 1994.
