Travel Guide - The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo

InformationInformation

The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo (NMWA) was established in 1959. It is Japan's only national art museum that features a wide range of Western art. The museum exhibits the works of famous Western painters and sculptors, mostly French artists from the Renaissance to the early 20th century as a permanent collection. The museum is also frequently host to special exhibits on loan from other museums of international repute. The museum's main building was designed by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier.
NMWA was originally built to house "Matsukata Collection", the collection of western art works gathered in London, Paris and Berlin by the industrialist Matsukata Kojiro. His collection has a special emphasis on the French impressionists, with originals by Rodin, including "The Thinker", and paintings and sketches by, among others, Renoir and Monet.
