To-ji Temple (Kyoo-Gokoku-ji Temple)

Information
To-ji Temple was established in 794 to protect Heian-kyo, the capital of Japan at that time. The temple's official name is Kyoo-Gokoku-ji (The Temple for the Defense of the Nation by Means of the King of Doctrines). Then the temple was handed over from Emperor Saga to Kukai (Kobo-Daishi) in 823, and became the main temple of the Shingon school of Buddhism. Many of the temple's buildings were once destroyed by peasant riots or fire, but they were reconstructed during the Muromachi Period (1336 - 1573) and the Edo Period (1603 – 1868).
The 21 of Buddhist statues in the Kodo lecture hall represent the world of Esoteric Buddhism's Mandala. The Kondo main hall contains statues depicting the Yakushi (Healing Buddha) trinity. The temple's five-story pagoda is the highest wooden pagoda in Japan (54.8 meters) and also designated as a National Treasure. After burnt down several times, the present pagoda was rebuilt in 1644 with support from the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu. Today, the pagoda is regarded as the symbol of Kyoto and can be seen frequently on TV and books.
Kobo-ichi Market is held at the temple on the 21st of each month. Second-hand clothes and antiques are sold at the market.
