Tocho-ji Temple

Information

Tocho-ji is the first temple for Shingon esoteric Buddhism in Japan opened by Kukai (Kobo-Daishi). While the structure is modern, the temple has been long established. Completed only in 1993, the biggest attraction for visitors is its image of Buddha, which at 10.8 meters is Japan's tallest such wooden image. Walking through a dark hallway to see a Ksitigarbha statue called "Jigoku-Gokuraku Meguri (a tour of Heaven and Hell)" is worth visiting.
