Tokyo Metropolitan Edo-Tokyo Museum

Information
Tokyo Metropolitan Edo-Tokyo Museum aims to consider the future of Tokyo by protecting historical heritage of Edo-Tokyo, as well as reflecting upon its history and culture.
With a population of 1.3 million, “Edo” – the former name of Tokyo – was the world’s largest and most prosperous city in the 18th century. An efficient urban infrastructure was established at that time including water supply, a traffic network leveraging water ways, and a scheme to maintain security. The exhibitions of the Edo-Tokyo Museum reveal the culture and industrial development of Tokyo from just before Edo Period (1603 – 1868) to the present day.
The permanent exhibit contains some 2,500 items including Ukiyo-e prints, picture scrolls, Kimonos and old maps, together with about 50 models depicting buildings and ways of life. The atmosphere of Edo and Tokyo is brought to life through large-scale models of Edo streets faithfully reproduced in actual size, as well as real artifacts that were actually used by people in bygone eras. Free earphone guides (English, Korean & Chinese) and a tour with an English-speaking volunteer are available.
