Travel Guide - Tokyo National Museum

InformationInformation

Opened in 1872, Tokyo National Museum is the oldest museum in Japan. The museum has the world's largest collection of Japanese art. The number of artifacts exceeds 115,000 including among them 87 national treasures and 633 important cultural treasures. Only a portion of the museum's huge collection (about 7,500 items) is displayed at any one time.
The museum has five galleries (Hon-kan main building, Toyo-kan, Hyokei-kan, Heisei-kan, Horyu-ji Homotsu-kan) and the most important of which is, of course, the Hon-kan main building. It is straight ahead as you enter, and houses a very impressive collection of Japanese art, from sculpture and swords to lacquerware and calligraphy. The Toyo-kan (The Gallery of Eastern Antiquities), to the right of the ticket booth, has a collection of art and archaeological finds from all of Asia east of Egypt. The Hyokei-kan, to the left of the ticket booth, has a collection of Japanese archaeological finds. There is a room devoted to artifacts used by the Ainu people, the indigenous ethnic group of Japan who now live only in Hokkaido. Heisei-kan was opened in 1999 to commemorate the crown prince Naruhito's marriage. The building is mainly used for special exhibitions, but also displays Japanese archaeological remains. The Horyu-ji Homotsu-kan (the Gallery of Horyu-ji Treatures) exhibits treasures from Horyu-ji Temple in Nara, such as masks, scrolls, etc.
In addition to these galleries, the museum also houses a research and information center, restaurants, museum shops, and a garden.
