Toshodai-ji Temple

Information

Toshodai-ji Temple is one of the great surviving structures of the 8th century. It was built in 759 by Ganjin, an illustrious Chinese priest of the Tang Dynasty. His statue placed in the Mikage-do Hall is the oldest portrait sculpture in Japan. As well as the statue, the temple's Kondo Hall, Kodo Hall, Treasure Hall, Drum Tower are all designated as national treasures.
