Hiyoshi-Taisha Shrine

Travel Guide - Hiyoshi-Taisha Shrine

Information

Hiyoshi-Taisha Shrine, also known as Hie-Taisha Shrine, is the main shrine of 3,800 Hiyoshi, Hie and Sanno shrines all around Japan.
The shrine is dedicated to the deities believed to protect Mt. Hiei-zan, and therefore it became closely connected with Enryaku-ji Temple.
The vermilion-painted main edifices (National Treasure) which stand out against the foliage of the grounds were rebuilt after the Siege of Mount Hiei by Oda Nobunaga in 1571.
The Nishi Hongu (West Hall of Worship) Honden main hall was constructed in 1586 with a particular architectural style called "Hie-zukuri".

Displayed in a separate hall are thee Mikoshi portable shrines which were carried into Kyoto by the monks of Mt. Hiei-zan whenever they wished to make demands of the emperor.
Since it would have been gross sacrilege to harm the sacred portable shrines, this tactic of taking the shrines hostage proved highly effective.
Sanno-sai Festival is the main event of the shrine in which Mikoshi fighting is held on April 13 and Mikoshi procession by boat on April 14.
