Matsumoto City Museum of Art is a municipal museum with a huge outdoor exhibit of an artist from Matsumoto, Yayoi Kusama's giant piece "Maboroshi no Hana (Illusion of Splendor)" welcoming visitors at the entrance.
The museum is an ambitious project, a comprehensive showcasing of local art that is not usually shown in other museums.
On display are works from calligraphers such as Matsumoto-born Shinzan Kamijo and Kazuo Tamura, who had a deep affection for the mountains of Nagano.
In addition, the works of Yayoi Kusama, an artist who has played an active role throughout the world in the field of modern art are exhibited.
