Mount Mitake-san

Travel Guide - Mount Mitake-san

Mt. Mitake-san is in Ome city, in the western part of Tokyo.
Among the mountains in Okutama area, Mt. Mitake-san is lower in elevation (929 meters in altitude), with well-maintained trails and use of cable car that links the foothills of the mountain to its summit, making it a safe choice for beginner climbers.

The mountain and its surrounding area offers panoramic views of unspoiled nature.
Its dense broadleaf forests, flowers blooming in season such as Azalea and Anemonopsis, refreshing greenery, fall foliage, and breathtaking scenery visible through the clear winter air make it hard to believe that this spot is just 90 minutes from central Tokyo.

Unique historical sites and religious buildings are other attractions that give added appeal to Mt. Mitake-san.
Musashi Mitake-jinja Shrine at the top of the mountain is one such sight where visitors can admire the authentic form of Japanese religious architecture.
Traditional events or practices such as Takigi-Kagura (Shinto dance performances by firelight) or meditation under a waterfall also take place year-round at Mt. Mitake-san.
