Nakamise-dori Street

Travel Guide - Nakamise-dori Street

Information

Nakamise-dori Street is a 250-meter long stone-paved promenade between Kaminari-mon Gate and Hozo-mon Gate.
This is an approach to Senso-ji Temple and is always bustling with visitors to the temple all year round.

Nakamise-dori Street is also known as one of the oldest shopping districts in Japan, dating from the Edo Period (1603 - 1868).
The street is lined with 90 stores that sell everything from tourist trinkets to genuine Edo-style crafts such as traditional toys and accessories made of Japanese textile or paper.
There is even a shop selling wigs to be worn with a Kimono.
Some shops specialize in their homemade Senbei rice crackers that are very popular with Japanese visitors.
There are also stalls that offer traditional Japanese sweets such as Dango dumpling, Manju buns, and Ningyo-yaki (doll-shaped bean paste filled cakes).
With their brightly colored decorations and uniform structure, the street recreate the atmosphere of old Japan.
