Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple

Travel Guide - Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple

Information

Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple is the head temple of the Chisan sect of Shingon Buddhism established in 940.
The temple is one of the three major temples in the Kanto region that are dedicated to Fudo-Myoo (Acala), a deity who exorcises evil spirits and ghosts.
For that reason, the temple is also called “Narita-no-Ofudo-sama (Narita's Fudo-Myoo)”.
The image of Fudo-Myoo enshrined in the temple's Dai-hondo great main hall is extremely valuable because the image was carved, consecrated by Kobo-Daishi (Kukai) himself upon the direct order of Emperor Saga in 810.
The image was originally enshrined at Jingo-ji Temple in Kyoto for a long period of time.
At the time of a revolt by Taira-no-Masakado in 939, the great monk Kancho carried the image to the Kanto region with him on secret orders from Emperor Suzaku.

Narita-san Shinsho-ji is a prominent temple in Japan with over 10 million visitors per year seeking family safety, traffic safety, and disaster elimination.
The temple grounds feature the Komyo-do hall, Shaka-do hall, Three-storied Great Pagoda of Peace, Gaku-do hall (Tablet hall), and a Nio-mon gate which are all constructed in the 1700s or 1800s and listed in Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
