Nawate-dori Street

Travel Guide - Nawate-dori Street

Information

As a castle town thrived around the castle for centuries, there are many old buildings and rows of houses in Matsumoto which show us what Japan was like years ago.

Along the bank of the Metoba-gawa River runs Nawate-dori, a narrow street which was a border between the Samurai residences and the commoner residences in the Edo era (1603 – 1868).
With a long history in Matsumoto, Nawate-dori's stone-paved street with food stalls, antique stores and shops selling everything from curios to children's books is a charming place to stroll and shop for souvenirs.
