Onjo-ji Temple (Mii-dera Temple)

Travel Guide - Onjo-ji Temple (Mii-dera Temple)

Information

Onjo-ji Temple, generally known as Mii-dera Temple, was founded in 686 in memory of Emperor Kobun, the elder son of Emperor Tenji.
The temple is the head branch of the Jimon branch of the Tendai school of Buddhism.
It started its days as a branch of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mt. Hiei-zan, but later the two fell into conflict, and Onjo-ji Temple was repeatedly razed by Enryaku-ji's warrior monks.
Even though the temple was burnt down several times by the conflicts and other wars, it was reconstructed by the authorities at the times, such as Minamoto-no-Sanetomo, Ashikaga Takauji, Kita-no-Mandokoro (Toyotomi Hideyoshi's wife), and Tokugawa Ieyasu.

The temple's Evening Bell (Mii-no-Bansho) is one of the well-known Omi Hakkei (Best Eight scenic spots of Omi, Shiga Prefecture).
