Sarusawa-ike Pond

Travel Guide - Sarusawa-ike Pond

Sarusawa-ike Pond is a small artificial pond with 360 meters in circumference.
It was created in 749 as a pond of Kofuku-ji Temple.

The sight of the pond with the five-storied pagoda of the temple in behind has long been known as one of the most popular sceneries in Nara.
Turtles basking in the sun can also be seen here.

A legend says a maid in the imperial palace committed suicide by diving into the pond because of falling out of favor with the emperor in the Nara Period (710 - 194).
Uneme-jinja Shrine located near the pond said to have been established to console her soul.
