Senshu Park (Kubota Castle Ruins)

Travel Guide - Senshu Park (Kubota Castle Ruins)

Information

Senshu Park marks the site of the now-ruined Kubota Castle of the Satake clan.
Kubota Castle was originally built in 1604 by Satake Yoshinobu.
Unlike other Japanese castles, most part of the castle didn't have stone walls.
The castle also never had an imposing Honmaru main keep and a palace (Honmaru-goten) was built instead.
It is said that the reason of which was to avert suspicion from the Tokugawa shogunate.

The castle was burnet down by fire in 1880 and Senshu Park was established in the place in 1896.
One of the eight corner turrets of the castle (Osumi-yagura) was reconstructed in 1989, and the front gate of the castle (Omote-mon) was reconstructed in 2001.
The reconstructed Osumi-yagura turret has an observatory which offers a nice view of Akita city.

Noted for the beauty of cherry blossoms and azaleas in season, today's Senshu Park provides the locals with greenery and is a favorite relaxing spot for them.
A number of cultural facilities such as Akita City Central Library Meitoku-kan, Akita Museum of Art and Akita Prefectural Hall are located in the park.
